Default Drain ing the sump

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Here is the first dumb question. My (new to me) 1988 Softail was stored for over two years with the oil tank full but the output line not pinched off. Well, gravity did it's thing and the oil went from the tank to the flywheel case (sump?). How do I get the stuff out of there?
Did I cause lots of damage by attempting to sart the thing - 3 or 4 turns before I noticed oil spewing out the crank case vent tube?

Don't worry about it; you didn't damage anything. In fact, that's one way of clearing the sump. You could pull the cap off the tank, and extend the vent line into the filler opening, and pump it all out of the sump/vent line. When it quits, shut the bike down, and do an oil & filter change.

What model '88 softail? I have a Heratige with 95k that's running strong. Beautiful two tone cream on black paint and LOTS of chrome. One of these days I will figure out how to post a photo of it.
Have fun.

Thank you Skip, that's a worry gone. Now I ahve to figure out why I don't get a spark - that's for another day.

Pat.

The bike is a 1988 Heritage Softail - I don't know if it was called a "Classic" then, but it has the bags, the windshield, studded seat and pillion, and about a hundred pieces of chrome with which I'm having fun figuring out where it all goes.
