Mark

I wouldn't call anybody an idiot, I would just call you VERY lucky. I have a bud that is a harley tech at a dealer and they have had a few late model bikes come back with trans failures that were all running syn 3 in the trans. The cause of the failures were later discovered that it was a lubrication issue. It's a judgement call here. I choose to avoid a known issue if at all possible.

Okay - My wife found the receipt and it seems they used snyth 3 in all three cause they charged for 7 quarts - Should be an easy top off from here! Thanks Joe and thanks to TCSTD(Bill) for teaching me about the vent tube
Just an observation and I don't remember your bike, but why would you need 7 quarts of oil? My Softail takes 3-1/2 in the crank and less than a quart in each of the primary and transmission.

The baggers specify 4 qts in the engine (even though it will not fit), should be around 24 ozs. in the trans and 32 oz in the primary

You are right about the math, I guess the extra one and one half is for the mechanic's bike

I use mobil 1 75-90 in mine. I have talked to a few tecks that are very much aware of the problems that they are having with SYN 3 in trannies but are forbidden to talk about it. It just does not make sence to put motor oil in a trans. Motor oil is for motors and gear oil is for trannies.
H/D has been selling tranny oil for years and it is a proven product that sells for about $5 imo if you need to buy your oil from Harley this is the way to go. However it's your bike and your money so I guess you got to do what you got to do.

Wow - Lubrication is a passionate subject! - My brain hurts - One thing I learned is that it is smart to stay away from a lot of the dealers if you can - I went in tonight to talk to them about it and left with 7 quarts of syn3 and a filter and some gaskets - I was too quiet to argue about the price and too shy or stupid to say no - It ends now - Except for warranty work I am done with them

It is hard to argue with Mark's mileage but I suspect that it is more than luck - He knows more than I'll ever know about bikes and takes the time to take care of his bike his way. I bet there are lot's of folks here that make it work their own way.

RK101, you are new to me (And thanks for your input as well) but as for the rest of you - I read everything you post without fail and I mean everything. Your posts are excellent and I can't believe how much knowledge gets shared here. Given my abilities and a reasonable expectation of what I am capable of I will drain everything out this weekend, go with gear lube in the Tyranny, use syn3 until I run out and start the process of forming my own informed opinion. Can't thank you enough for all the input - You have no idea how much I appreciate it -

Pat - I swithed up on you - I do have a softail I am selling and I have an EG Classic that we were reffering to

Kevin

If after all this discussion, we have led you down the right path with something these dealers will not discuss, then it was worth it all. Now if we could only get you to switch over to Mobil 1 after the syn 3 runs out, then we've really accomplished something, you'd like the difference!

Kess I'm fairly new to this board but I'm sure not new to riding Harleys. I remember when H/D said they did not recomened Syn oil in our bikes. Then they came out with there own magical syn oil and all is cool and it's ok to use there brand for $9 a quart.
and you can put it in all three holes to. Hey if I was selling oil for $9 a quart and only paying $3 for it I'd be telling you to take some home for the wife and kids, it'll keep them loose to. Like I said it's your bike and you got to make yourself happy. What ever you decide to do is fine with me. However I think I'm going to stick with the Mobil v-twin oil in my motor and the 75-90 in the tranny and the H/D primary oil in the primary, because it makes me happy. Ride safe RK101
