Default Oil

I have an 86 FLT with 58,000 miles showing on the clock. It runs great, burns very little or no oil and it leaks a bity at the rear cylinder base. The slight leak at the cylinder does bother me but not much. What bothers me a great deal is the oil that comes out of the breather. If the bike's been sitting for a while it will puke out several ounces of oil at start up. If the bike's been running for a while it will continually dribble a bit of oil out the breather and leave (mark it's spot) when parked. Any suggestions on solving this problem. I hate to park my bike on my friend's driveways because it will surely leave an oil spot. Thanks in advance. JT

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. Your base gaskets can be fixed by changing them for good quality ones. They were a problem on earlier bikes (my 1990 Glide leaked after a few years too), but once replaced they were fine.

As for your oil problem, that is probably coming out of the engine breather and is likely to be due to the non-return valve in the oiling system having developed a leak. Oil is building up in the crankcases while the bike is parked overnight and the flywheels fling it everywhere on start-up.

This is sometimes called 'sumping' and is covered in this link, including the solution.
