I will be taking 62 to 29 Palms, then turn toward Amboy, then National Trails Hwy (old 66)toward Essex, then cut to the 40, then onto Needles.
Once at Amboy, if the road seems a mess, I can turn on Kelbaker to the 40. I have made that turn, and it is only about 15 miles to get on the 40 at that point.
Do not get on the 40 at Kelbaker. There is construction traffic on the bridges east of there and the speed is down to 35mph. Trust me stay on the 66. We made that mistake our last trip and it was horrible on the 40. It was the worst 50 miles of the trip.
From what I remember 66 will take you into Needles. We fueled there then took the 40 to Golden Shores (about 2 miles) stopped at Topock for a drink and snack then hit 66 again and went to Oatman. Pretty cool little ghost town.
