Good information on this subject guys.
There are a lot of LEO riders and I believe most will leave you alone unless forced by the higher ups.
I would be a Hipocrit if I wrote someone for this.
I am on the way to get SE pipes for 2000 RK but have problem withgetting tickets. Icalled HD Glendale parts department few hours ago and ask if it is legal to put on SE pipes. The answer is if it is made by HD then it is legal.....I am confused....are there SE pipesNOT made by HD??
my understanding, is only '07 SE pipes are 50 states legal as the '07 have O2 sensors, if you go to Glendale HD , they will have you sign a paper saying you know the pipes they are sell you are not legal in Ca, but are in 49 states. did it when i put SE pipes on my '05

It's not legal.
There's an old law dating back to 1972 or something, a federal law, that requires exhaust pipes on motorcycles to carry a serial number that matches the same serial number on the frame. Cops are now using this old law to bust people for having modified exhaust. But usually they only go after bikers with loud pipes.
This is the big reason I went with slip ons. If I get ticketed, i can slip the Stocks back on and should be good to go. However, I think some common sense goes a long way, and a lack of it has bit us in the a$$..... if I am in a residential area, or rolling down Main st, I stay off the throttle. When I am out in the hills and back roads I let her rip. When I see mental midgits screaming through residential areas revving the hell out of their engine, it pi$$es me off. They are the reason we have these issues. Also, while I am on my soap box......these knuckle heads with coffee can tail pipes on jap cars make just as much noise. As do the tone deaf idiots with huge speakers. They are more annoying than any Motorcycle.
It is a bad mixture of lack of respect on "some" motorcyclist, and non motorcyclist haveing nothing better to whine about.

I listed the laws above....if my original exhaust (hanging in the garage) has a serial number on it that matches. It is not on the header, heat shield, or mufflers. Niether the mufflers nor the headers have a "emmisions" function (on my bike - an 06 Softail) and by CA state laws are replacable with anything that produces less noise then the legal DB level for all vehicles.
And actually I think the EPA law I quoted is the wrong one. The one Denver is using is here http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/w...cfr205_05.html(motorcycle info starts at 157 and tampering at 162-2). Yes - Federal EPA law says you cannot Tamper with a noise reduction labeled exhaust UNLESS per 205.58-2(c) the vehicle still meets the noise emission standards of 205.52 which says 1988 and newer must be at 80 db (note CA says 1985 and newer must be 80db). Denver is just banking on 205.58-2(d) and we do not have such a law. Sorry for the confusion on the laws....I was looking up several things at one time.
That's because it's not there - it's just what they are using to ticket people. Funny thing is, Temecula PD ride Harleys and they have screamin eagle pipes on their bikes as well. Far as I can tell, they are only going after the guys who roll thru old town revving their engines the whole time. I have straight fishtails on my bagger and go down there all the time - no tickets! I've seen police all over ad they've seen me. I just don't antagonize them.
As for me I've had lots of Hd's and the loudest one I hadwas a Sporty with a LSR 2into1 wow loud but no tickets "lucky I Guess" now I have a RoadKing and I have some V&H Oval Slip ons and I would say if I blip it she will make some noise but if I stay decentit stays quiet. I happen to live off of Imperial Highway and I have never ( Knock on Wood) been harrassed ( Is that one word or Two) as for my `07 stock pipes I just read it and it reads.......
This Harley Davidson exhaust 65846-07 system meets EPA Noise Emmission Requirements of 80 db (a) For the following Motorcycles. Installation of this exhaust system on Motorcycle models not specified may violate Federal Law . HARFLT 1584
So if they wanted to be Dick Heads I guess they can but as far as I know it is only a fixit ticket and can be written off with about a 15 minute changeout of pipes as long as you dont change the headers to true duals you should be fine.
A sad day that due to an overwhealming increase of riders and some crazy aftermarket pipes we all have to pay the price.
