I just joined the forum so I'm just catching up on old topics. I have done an annual ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to DV each October for the past 22 years. We take 120 over Tioga Pass (through Groveland) and then south on 395/136/190 (I think those are the numbers, I just know the route)to Death Valley. The first night we stay in Bishop, the second night we stay in Kernville. Then back to the Bay Area. It's a 1,000 mile ride for us.

If you plan on doing this in January, you can't go over Tioga so I guess you'll head south and pick up 178 east. 178 through the Panamint Valley has not been fully repaired from the storms last year so you'll need to head north on 395 and pick up 190. There is lodging available at Furnace Creek Ranch and you can make that your base and each day venture out in a different direction. Nearby is Zabriskie Point which is a nice scenic place to take in.
