Default Voltage on the dash

Just wondering, what is your typical voltage you see when you turn on your bike? I've han my PAS since 5/21, and I usually see 11.9/12.0, from what I remember. Garaged, but not always on the tender. Well, yesterday morning I was on a trip, and had the bike outside in the 40s, after riding it all day. When I went to start it, it showed 11.6, and I couldn't get it to start. Ended up taking the skid plate off and using a powerbank to charge it up to 11.8 and it started...

This was at the Iron Horse Lodge, and had many good conversations on Sunday night, most people really admiring the bike, and Harley for building it. Not the best advertisement when the very next morning I can't start it... And then to get to the battery, I have to undo the skid plate...

Mine is in the high 13 up to 14.1V on the display. Who knows if it's accurate.

The battery is a real problem for this bike. I read here or on the Other PA forum someone putting one of those hybrid 350CCA batteries in and it didn't really improve the situation at all. Is it possible the charging system is just not up to the task?

That's when running, right?

I'm talking when you turn the ignition on, but before starting it.

Sounds like a week batter or bad charging system. Time to start trouble shooting.

Sounds like you have a problem on the way. Even not running it should show 12+ Volts. If it consistently shows less than 13.5 or so when running, you probably have a charging system problem. Maybe the stator issue that some have had. If you are lucky, maybe just a weak battery. If you haven't had recent software updates, then there could also be parasitic drain issues that will drain the battery overnight.

One good idea for these bikes is to fit a permanent jumper harness to the battery so you dont need to take the skid plate off to charge it. Noco make a good one - it's their part GBC007 and will work with Noco and HD boost packs. You can wire it directly to the battery and tuck it in so it sits in the little cutout on the left of the skid plate. Then just pull it out a bit when you need it.

https://no.co/gbc007

If you fit one of these, it becomes a 30 second task to jump start the bike. I put one on all my bikes just for peace of mind.

I fit these to mine as well and I have a NOCO adapter that plugs into it that gives me an SAE plugin.

I meant voltage when the engine is not running. I get 14/14.1 when the engine is running, and 11.8-12.0 when I just turn the on switch. This incident with sitting overnight outside was the only time I ever saw 11.6, and it felt like it almost could start, and was able to do that multiple times, until the voltage dropped, and the dash started doing funny stuff. At home, the morning after it showed 12.1... Anyway, I'm taking it to the dealer to get the battery "checked out". If they don't replace it, I'll get a new one just in case.

I'll definitely put the jumper harness on it, thanks for the suggestion. Taking the optional skid plate off just to jump is a PITA.

Well, I got the battery tested, and it tested good at 12.49V at 284 cca (rated for 225 cca).

Since this just happened once, I'll just put the harness on and carry a powerpack on overnight rides for now...
