Did the belly numbers match? That chunk missing could be from running the bike without a skid plate, not a difficult fix to be honest.

I’m yet to physically see the bike, the photos I have are taken by the current owner, which makes it tricky to do a proper assessment of the cases.

Yes it does appear to have matching belly numbers.

It wouldn't be too expensive to fix that or any other little defect in the cases. Just need to find a good welder. Is the asking price very high? It appears the seller is being very cooperative.

I wondered this same thing when I first saw the VIN number.
There is a small oil line/crack right above the VIN and coming from the case bolt.
I would have a good look at that.
