Default Changing Oil

Hey guys, need your input..

I have a 64 pan bottom with shovelheads and a horseshoe oil tank. I need to change the oil and noticed that there is no drain plug. The oil tank is higher than the motor. So..I came up with two options.
1. Drain the oil tank and use a vampire pump to suck the oil out of the case. This seems like it would drain about 80% of the oil.
2. Drain the oil tank, then extend the oil return line to a bucket. Start up the bike and let the oil pump do the work. Have a friend pour oil into the tank/motor as it drains down.

What do you all think? Any better methods?
Thanks
Phillip

Not sure what you mean when you say it is mounted above the motor; most are mounted behind the motor somewhere around the seat post. Tha t being said...

If you have no drain plug on your tank, the easiest way is to drop the feed line from the oil tank to the motor. Does that leave some motor oil in the bottom of the cases? Yes. Is that gonna be a problem? Not unless you have metal in your cases from something that is FUBAR (then it is about pulling the motor and splitting the cases anyway).

My 49 has a crankcase drain plug on the vin side of the motor. No way you are going to get at it unless you pull the motor. I know that somewhere MoCo stopped that.

Personally I would not run my bike w/o oil in order to try and 'drain' all the oil, but that is just my opinion...

Panz4ever, you are right the oil tank is behind the motor like you said, I just meant it is elevated in relation to the case.
Thanks for the advice, it seems much simpler than my other ideas.

After you drop the oil from the tank and refill, I have removed the return line to the tank from the pump and started the biker and ran it till the oil started pumping clean oil out of it (about 3/4 to 1 quart) Then reconnect the line and recheck oil level and top off as necessary. This helps clear the old oil in the crankcase
