Default my first panhead

I bought a '48 panhead today. Just got home with it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best oil to use in it. Of course its leaking alittle.

Thanks,
woollyb

I will try to get a few pics posted within the next couple of days. Do I want to use a straight 50W? Or something like 20W50? I was planning on using Castrol GTX oil instead of HD oil.

I would go with the HD oil in straight weight (50 wt./60wt.); depending on temps. you will be riding in as to which. I too had a '48' years ago, sure wish I would have hung on to that one!

Next question. What manual should I buy so I can work on this bike? I've seen the Clymer one listed. But I would like one thats alittle more year specific.
Thanks for the help.

Does Harley still have these available, the manual? Mine is the original 1948 to 1957 H-D Panhead service manual. Easyriders used to sell them I know; I have a phone number, don't know if it is current though: 1-800-247-6246. Goodluck

Default Welcome woollyb

Being in Fl. my oil viscosity changes with the seasons. No less than 50 & no more than 70. Tranny gets the same as engine......
