Greetings fellow PANHEADS, I live in S. Texas and am restoring my 58 Duo-Glide, I regrettably admit when I bought it I had the “Deer in the headlight syndrome” really bad, as it turned out after some research not much of the ol Pan was correct and some of what was corrrect was junk. It has come a long way in the last couple of years starting with an OEM set of cases I got from the Netherlands, now it is mostly correct but for the shift and brake controls and the wheels (chrome hubs) (and a few dozen other “little” things) I am not trying to build the scoot for competition, it just kills the buzz when some moped rider or poser starts to point out incorrect items. It just seemed easier on the wallet in the long run to restore it rather than to simply stomp the crud out of each and every one of them.
My question tonight is,,, what is the correct finish for the brake pedal backing plate, pedal and master cylinder ect.. Most of the pictures I have seen show them to be dark as in painted black or parkerized? also would the 58 have the hole in it for the padded cover? I can not seem to find this in Bruce Ps book.
Thanks

mogman, welcome to the world of pans..first, tell the posers to kiss your ****. If you want to ride it and not make it some trailer queen that is taken to some show that some lame *** is gonna judge, build it the way YOU would like to see it done. A buddy and I spent 1 1/2 years putting his stock 48 + sidecar back together. He rode it sparingly, took several trophies with it and recently sold it because he fell on hard times. He calls and tells me could, should, would have ridden but...now its gone and all he talks about is the riding time he didn't do with her. Life is too short to listen to the posers!

Next item you need to purchase...go buy Greg Field's book titled "Harley Davidson Panheads". I swear it is the home companion to Palmers book. Very good color photos, talks about each year in a general way (where palmer is very specific). Not a mechanics book but very helpful for restoration purposes.

With that said...this information comes from Field's book...page 89...The backing plate is 8 1/2 inches in diameter and has a bell shaped reinforcement plate riveted with five rivets to a like shaped recess stamped into the area that stretches from the axle hole to the mounting stud. The backing plate was used from 1958 to 1963 and was painted black.

Lastly, not sure what you mean when you are talking about the "padded cover"

Good luck with your scoot and when you can post a couple pics of her!
