Default Starting issue

Hey guys, I have a starting problem with my 65 FLH. When I press the ignigion, the starter will spin, but it doesn't engage the "engine." I pulled the starter and thoroughlt cleaned it out, pulled the primary and cleaned the jackshaft, throw out bearing, replaced the solenoid, and all of the corresponding wires. When I put her back together, it started great, and ran strong. This morning, I went to fire it up and the same damn thing happed. I put the battery on charge, no change. I then hooked it up to my truck with jumper cables....no change. When you first press the ignition, it will engage for a second and turn the engine over very briefly, but then the starter just spins. Any ideas???

First of all let me say, and I'm sure a lot of others agree, sure wish I had a push button!!!! Not getting any younger and I'm not sure who's kicking who! Anyway I have to agree, sounds like a bad bendix. Use the kicker! How the old saying goes, Be a Man, Ride a Pan!

I hear ya about the kicker, but man o man is that hard. I know, I sound like a wimp, but I'm yet to get that beast started using the kicker. As for the bendix.....isn't that a carburetor? I thought maybe the problem was with the jackshaft or something....I'm running a stock Linkert M series for what it's worth.

I agree with Hal64hd if the starter turns over but does not turn the engine over. Harley calls a bendix a starter drive.Been riding Harley s none stop for 40 years and when I bought my 02 Ultra was the first Harley I ever had with a electric starter. No such thing as a hard staring Harley! Just one out of tune or needs work.

46U, thanks bud. You all were correct. I took the jackshaft out and sure enough it is a bad drive gear. I didn't realize they called it a bendix. I ordered a new one today and she should be up and running soon enough. The bike fires right up when I hit the starter, but when I try the kicker, the compression is so high that I barely turn it over. I'll need an old timer to show me how it's done.
