Default 62 Panhead

I am new to this and this maybe the 3rd time I've posted this. Just bought this 62 pan a couple weeks ago. Been looking for quite sometime. Lots of stuff to weed thru out there. Was looking for something close to stock. Want to restore it to close to original but will be a rider.

Runs great. Sounds great. Motor supposed to have been rebuilt 4000 miles ago. Runs fast and smooth. Brakes are non-existent. Almost ended up in a snowbank on my test ride. Plan on taking care of breaks first, changing out fork oil, repacking wheel bearings. Has a belt drive. Have had 2 pans but never had a belt drive. Clutch is either engaged or disengaged. Not much in between so I'm looking forward to digging into that.
I've got the original tanks but the tank shutoff on the left tank doesn't work. Bike came with an after market shutoff. I can't get the piece you turn on top of the tank off. Anyone know how it comes off?

Yeah, still a foot of snow on the ground here in Fargo. Missed by the big midwest storm that's coming thru though....thank God....

pan guy the brakes were bad to start with even with a complete rebuild it wount be anywhere near whats on bikes today, if youre gonna show it as a restored bike or as you daid a driver id go disc at least on rear performance machine use to make a kit for the star hubs, if you stay with the drums id change the rubber rear line with a black braide line to get some power on it as the rubber lines expand with pressure, see if theres enough drum left to turn them if not replace with after market drms, and rebuild the wheel cylinders even if they look good mike the bore see if its rebuildable, have youre brk shoes arched to match drums, for best braking, also gas shut off on top orig had a brass knurled cap with a screw in it to take off. hope theres some info you can use bud

Default Pan

Bud, thanks for the advice. The brake hose and fitting the shoes to the drum are good ideas. Regarding the gas shut off, mine doesn't have a brass piece at the top with a screw. I'll see if I can figure this thing out to send you a picture of what I've got. It's got me baffled. And of course, the manual I downloaded on line doesn't have a schematic of it. Let me know if you can see the pic.

Bud, I also like your disc brake idea for the rear. This is going to be a rider, not a show bike. I don't want to change out the swingarm or wheel. Are there disc brakes out there I can slap on with little modification or am I going to have to get a different swingarm if I go with a disc?

pan guy I see the pic the knurled part and the **** un screw from one another, then it should come apart. I had an early swingarm like yours with star hubs with performance machine disc brake kit on it had to weld a small tab on bottom of swing arm on right side the brake goes to right side and new sprocket stays on left adapter blocks on both sides or star hubs mount to original holes and new spacers on both sides, perry at performance machine set this up for me years ago so its doable and worked great compared to whats there now 2,4,or 6 puck caliper more money ea. size work awesome later bud

Thanks for the info on the disc brake Bud. Sounds like a plan. I got the **** and the knurled part off. The rod inside, which was broke, tapped out fine. There is still a round piece on top. Does that stay put? Kim
