Default Voltage regulator woes

I have a true '64 pan that has blown through 3 external voltage regulators in the past 5 months. Sucks at $60 a pop. It has been converted to 12v. Basically what happens is as I'm riding along, there are no problems. When I come to a stop, my headlights fade out and eventually the bike dies if I don't keep revving it up. As I rev it up, the lights get brighter, but that's typical of a pan. If I leave the headlights off, the bike runs fine and never dies. Replacing the voltage regulator seems to solve the problem for 100 miles or so. Then it happens again. Yes I've polarized all of the new regulators properly.

So I'm stuck between two possibles. A batch of bum regulators from accel, or a possible generator overcharge condition. Ideas?

For me...I would pull the genrator and have it tested. Next I would get rid of the Accel (keep hearing a lot of bad things about the new ones) and go with CycleElectric. USA made and definitely a cut above the competition.

look at the box it sayes CHINA $hit in side - accel has gone to the dark side, and all the american flags are gone in the books next to anything they sell, soo its all garbage and are starting to not want to exchange what is junk new out of the box

cycle electric is USA made and good quality but YOU will pay for that in dollars but you will get what you pay for

look alike electronic regulators are avauilable for most of the antique restored bikes, the guys that ride them have them

+3 on the Cycle Electrics solid state regulator. My 1964 Duo Glide is converted to 12 volt also. I got tired of replacing points type regulators. I put a Cycle Electrics regulator on 20 years ago. Rebuilt the generator a couple of times. But. Still the same regulator.
