Default bad kicker

my 54 pan's kicker cut loose on me last year. tore it down and replaced ratchet gears crank starting gear and throw out bearing. got back together, kicked it through several times to make sure it wasn't gonna hang up on anything. got bike started and about 30 seconds later my kicker starts pin-wheeling again. what am i missing? is there a gear thats not dis engaging?

Bob... are you sure that you have the correct clutch push rod installed. There is a difference between the kick and electric start ones (electric one is longer).Sounds like you said...not disengaging. Since you already replaced the other items this might be a good start for identifying the problem.

i replaced clutch pushrod with the same length as the one that was all tore up. it has a suicide shift so i'm not really sure what length the one i need is. i'll have to look up the order sheet to see what length i ordered was. thanks panz4ever, thats some place to start.

It just so happens that I measured my clutch rod today. 13.5 inches (56 pan). I am actualy trying to get a replacement but I can't seem to find one that has the tappered end with groove for the c-clip and 13.5 inches long... any ideas?

panhd...

1. 36-64 clutch pushrod is 13 1/4"; 65-69 is 13 1/2"; 70-E75 is 14" and L75-84 is 14 1/8". Seems that may solve it for you.

2. J&P sells the late style throw out bearing kit (includes pushrod, c clip, oil slinger, washers and clutch release finger) for 36-64 models for $32.99. The part number for J&P is #6300252

I do not see where theysell the late style pushrod separately that is adapted for the older scoots. Think you may have to buy the entire kit or convert back to the earlier style throwout bearing.

Lots of Pan parts here, http://www.antiquecyclesupply.com/
I got most of the parts to rebuild my '57 from them.

if the kicker shaft bushing is to tight it will hang up and do what you discribed it's doing, i dont think the clutch rod would make your kicker pin-wheel or what ever it's doing. i do know the shaft and bushing clearances are very important. (to loose, slips, to tight, hangs up) for parts try nosparts.com hope this helps

when you say pin-wheel, do you mean that when the engine is running, the kicker flys down on its own??

or do you mean that when you kick it, it just flys down without turning the engine??

the first scenario is usually caused by a tight bushing or lack of initial lubrication on the bushing for the ratchet gear on the mainshaft.

senario two is usually caused by a broken gear, or something set up wrong in relation to the window of the kicker gear itself. or a slipping clutch.
