Default 4 speed transmission leak

I have a used transmission that I recently replaced the main gear seal. I have not put on a sprocket or torqued up anything yet. The tranny oil all came out of the bike. Is it because the drive gear was on. Or is there a seal back against the main gear bushing that would need replacement. The tranny is an 80's model with no keyed spacer. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

The sleeve that the seal rides on is a metal to metal fit against the shoulder on the main shaft. If the sprocket is not tight oil will leak between the sleeve and the mainshaft. I put a very small amount of sealer in that area before I install the seal. Also be sure to tighten the sprocket nut to the recommended torque.
