Default '96 FXDWG Derby Cover Question..

Hello All, Been reading these Forums for quite a while, but this is my first post....

After riding throughout the 1970's and 1980's ('49 Panhead, 72 FX, 81 Sturgis) I took a break, and just recently got the urge to "get back in the saddle".

Picked up a Excellent Condition '96 FXDWG, and after checking it out with a fine tooth comb can only find one minor problem. After riding a few miles I've noticed a slight dampness under the primary cover. Not enough to drip or anything, but a slight leak.. Tracked down the problem and I guess I should feel lucky as it is coming from the bottom of the derby cover. As you can see from the below picture, an aftermarket cover has been installed, so it might have had a slight leak since that time.

I purchase a real 'rubber' O-Ring from J&P, 431-540 (25416-84) that is suppose to be for a 1984 - 1998 EVO. I also have the correct TORX wrench, etc...

My question is if there is any special trick needed to install the O-Ring, or if installation is pretty straight forward.

Thanks for any information.

There are no tricks that I know of. The O ring just goes in the grove on the primary cover, and the derby cover goes on.

I would have the bike level before removing the derby cover or you are going to loose some primary oil and make a mess.

Looks like a nice clean bike for a 96. How many miles??

Regards,

Bill

Thanks...

I got the bike from a small dealer in Alabama about a month ago, and it has 20K miles on it. I can't find any flaws at all, so it apparently led a very 'sheltered life'. Even had brand new tires installed when delivered. I've only put a couple hundred miles on it so far, but it's a real runner and handles perfectly on the road...

I had a little moisture as well on my 87 FXSTC. There's a disc that you can buy that goes behind the derby cover. I have that plus the O-Ring and the moisture problem is gone.

No tricks but when you install the cover with the bolts, use the torx socket on an extension with NO wrench and just lightly seat the bolts by hand like this holding the cover in place in the middle snugly. Run the bolts finger tight , then snug them just a bit, followed up by the proper torque.

If you have any problems with leakage, check the cover for warpage by using a piece of glass with valve grinding compuund on it and make a figure 8 to see it it hits all the way around the edge of the cover. You can shave the high spots down like this so there shouldn't be any leakage afterwards.

Thanks for the information guys.....

I got tied up over the weekend and didn't get to install the o-ring, but will get to it this week...

The 'little moisture' isn't that bad, but it needs to be fixed.

Thanks again...
