Default Mainshaft Oilseal Problem

Hi there – new kid on the block looking for some help.

I’m building a custom and bought an engine/gearbox from an insurance write-off. The engine number indicates it came from a 1999 Softail FXSTC. It’s a five speed box.

The problem concerns the main oilseal at the back of the primary case (the one that the gearbox shaft goes through into the primary). Every chart I’ve found online and two main dealers tell me that the part I need is 12052A. The problem is that that oilseal is expecting a 1.25” diameter shaft whereas mine is 63/64” diam.

Can anyone throw any light on this please?

Is the 5-speed transmission a Harley-Davidson part?
Part number "12052A" is the correct part number for the inner primary oil seal.

63/64 is .9844 or 25.0031 mm.

I think your talking about the seal that is pressed into the back side of the inner primary, if that is the case then you also need a race that goes over that 63/64 shaft. It is pressed on with a special tool.

If you search for inner primary race, you will get all the info you need. You have a bearing with no race pressed into the inner primary, then you have a seal on that inner primary, and you also have a race pressed onto the mainshaft. The seal and the inner primary bearing slip over the race that is installed on the mainshaft when you are putting the inner primary cover back on. Protect the seal from the splines on the shaft by putting some tape over the splines. Lots of youtube videos showing how and the setup.

The inner primary bearing and oil seal rides on that race and that race needs to be installed to a correct depth on the shaft.

You can avoid the race all together by going with the all ***** or baker high torque bearing. It eliminates the race (for alls ***** or baker high torque), but you have to use a different oil seal (comes with the bearing kit). So you have options Hope this helps YD

EDIT: part number for the race is 34091-85A, and I just measured the OD of that race and it's 1.25 od.

Yankee-Dog, you are the man!

Thanks - I've just researched your answer and I'm sure you have identified the issue spot on. So I can buy a race at $65 and then have the problems of fitting it or get a bearing/oil seal from All ***** at $40 which does the same job without the hassle. It's a no brainer.

Thanks again

Alls ***** is a longer in length bearing than the Baker high torque bearing. The Baker uses both retaining rings to hold it in place when installing the bearing in the inner primary housing.

The Alls ***** is longer, so it only uses the retaining ring that is closest to the oil seal for the inner primary (or in other words the snap ring closest to the engine/transmission). The inner snap ring closest to the clutch is omitted when using the Alls ***** due to it's length. From what I understand, because the Alls ***** is longer the clutch prevents it from moving inward. So just a heads up.

Also Jims has the same as the alls *****, some say it is the same one. Ebay has the alls ***** kit for 20 bucks delivered.

There are instructions with sketch/diagram for the alls ***** floating around the web. Glad to help. YD

Here is the link to our high torque bearing from Baker:

I have had one on my personal bike since 2007 when I put my DD6 in. It is a great product.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.
