6- Speed Mainshaft and Countershaft nut replacement?
Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
In the manual it says to lock to gears together by moving one of the shift dogs...so it'll be in two speeds at once and locks the two shafts against each other. Hopefully you're as confused about that as I was lol...I used a screwdriver handle between the two gears to lock them together...I tried the method in the Manual but couldn't figure it out. I'm sure it's simple and I'm just not seeing it. I have the tool from George's garage to remove the street door bearings and to install them and the tools to install the nuts and they worked great. Good luck
forgot to ask ...why are you replacing the nuts?

If I had a jig to hold back side of shafts (with gearset removed) I could remove the shifting drum and easily move the dogs to have the gears fight each other but not possible with a 6 speed while it is in the gearcase.
I installed a used transmission with 5k miles. Previous owner was doing some testing with it and sent the new nuts because he had loosened the originl ones doing the testing.
In 1st gear and locking bar between primary sprockets worked perfect!👍
Should have it on test ride after exhaust and floorboards install.
Sure didn't hold very much fluid in primary.🤷♂️
Bike was straight up on stand and it filled to bottom of clutch basket with less than a quart. Will recheck after a ride and it settles down.
After reading your post a second time I realized that you didn't have the gearset out of case...but you were on the right track for locking the gears anyway. Thats all my primary takes on a dry fill. I usually just do the whole quart and never had any shifting or clutch drag problems. It's always a good day when everything is back together lol

Yep, and as I didn't have the holder tool to hold the other shaft ends and or hold tranny in place, I didn't want to attempt the high torque. As easy as it was don't see a reason for the holding assy. and not just waiting until after back in gearcase and have everything meshed perfectly.
Just wish I would have had the tool to replace the shifting mechanism bushing. They were backordered everywhere but not too bad a job and can be done with gearset in so just primary drive removal is worse part but no biggie as wear only means a small bit more travel to shift.
Test rode her today about 30 miles and she shifts and acts perfect and everything is completely dry so far. Ran Mobile1 Vtwin 20/50 in tranny and once returned (30 miles) and let it sit a few hrs, I drained tranny (magnet and oil was spotless) and now have the Bel-Ray 85/140 and will see if a difference tomorrow. All that is left is installing saddlebags and rear floorboards. Shout out to "Stone Cold" for shipping me a transmission gearset at a great deal and words of advice! Installed a new shifting drum because of different neutral detent position, an "All *****" output shaft bearing in the inner primary. That and all new gaskets cost much more than the gearset. Compared to the 4 speeds I have rebuilt these 6-Speeds truly seem simple as pie and straight forward with a great design but from what I have seen 3rd gear has been a weak link for a good while now. This 107" 2017 Ultra truly runs its *** off as it so easily pulls up front wheel with just twist of throttle in 1st gear with an S&S 475 which from reading isn't supposed to be that good on the the lower end....🤷♂️
