Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
If the noise is present when the bike is stopped, in neutral (mainshaft spinning), and stops when put into gear (mainshaft stops), it is most likely the inner primary bearing.
I miss read the first sentence and assumed it was speed related and not RPM.. You are most likely right. It's the first place to look anyway. It could also be the main drive gear inner bearing , left right mainshaft bearing or throwout.. Throw-out on a hydraulic clutch has to be pretty low tho..
Im suspicious its the primary bearing since the input shaft would be changing rotation speed with each gear change, clutch disengaged.
If it does it with the clutch disengaged, I'd think right mainshaft bearing or throwout. Maybe OP don't know the difference between engaged and disengaged?
In the next few days I’ll attempt to record this noise. The multi make dealer is 35 miles away and their one Harley tech got pasted in an accident a couple months ago, otherwise id have them check it out.
OK got out today, this recording is after riding an hour on a 70 degree day. I shut the engine off at 40 MPH and coasted to a stop with the clutch handle in (disingaged) the entire time with the downshifts from 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd, 2nd to 1st as you can hear. Not part of the recording but with the engine running in neutral clutch out (engaged) rev it up to about 1800 or so you can hear it, stops when I pull the clutch and drop it into gear.
This noise is a lot louder on a 90 degree day multi hour ride.
So, primary bearing or transmission? Its a lot louder on the right side of the trans but I realize noises can travel.
It could be inner primary bearing or trap door mainshaft bearing and can probably rule out throw out bearing. I've blown the inner primary bearing on my 07 EGC and a mainshaft bearing on a 2000 fxdx. Neither sounded like that.. Failures I had gave more of a rumble like rolling a steel ball against a hard surface with a light coat of sand or even a steel roller from a floor jack on cement.. Yours has a howl to it.. I'd suspect the anti rattle first gear is damaged possibly from running the tranny low on oil. IIRC the 2018s still had the tranny to primary transfer problem.
“You must have a service manual to dig into this area, or you will be back here asking how to fix more than an IPB”
The old saw “not my first rodeo”. I’ve had the inner primary off a ‘91 EVO for the infamous drive pulley nut failure, familiar with compensator bolt torque, shimming a Twin Cam compensator etc. Also have the M8 service manual as well. Your comment is very accurate though, dive in without experience and most of all following the service manual leads to disaster.
This is my first time with odd noise / potential bearing failure thus my request for those that have been thru the primary bearing or transmission bearing or gear issues. I complained about this transmission when the bike was new, the 4th gear howl plus the supposed neutral rattle knock fix with the scissor gear 1st gear. Well, that neutral knock was very apparent in mine that gradually got better as did the 4th gear howl once I fixed the over tight primary chain. Here I am now though with this siren like noise.
