Default Is this compensator toast? (Pics)

Is this compensator toast? It’s from a ‘94 dyna with ~55k mi, and a bad compensator spring. The service manual just says to replace it if worn, but doesn’t publish wear limits. I would prefer to just replace the cap/spring pack if this will hold up, but it does look like it’s been scraping quite a bit

Probably not. Check the splines the cam runs on for wear. Look for cracked Belville springs in the cover. On the sliding cam, the tips will wear a step.. If it's significant, replace.

Other than what looks like gauling on the inner irng contact surface if the sprocket, I don't see anything that would worry me. But these ar epictures on the computer, so have a closer look using a magnifying glass as needed to ensure nothing is missed.

I wanted to post an update, the compensator was indeed, toast.

I haven’t measured it yet but it looks like nearly 1/8” difference, the peaks and the valleys were worn and the spring was partially collapsed, old one obviously on the right.

Looks to me like the chain will also need to be replaced.. Only judging by the wear pattern in the old 24 tooth gear.. gear

And yes the spring pack is done..

On my 98 Fatboy I added and extra spring plate to the pack because of the power the 97" motor makes... No issues..
