Default Bendix help Please??????

Ok here's my problem, I would try and start my bike (77' Ironhead) And it would turn over but not fire, As it was turning over it would make a crunching sound every so often. Sorry for this explanation ( er-er-er-er-er-er-er-crunch-er-er-er-er-er-er-ercrunch) sorry I couldn't think of another way for someone to get the Idea.. Any way, I took the stator motor off and cleaned the brushes, put it back together the way it showes in the HD manual, Tried it again and the same thing happend, this time it did the er-er-er crunch thing and then stoped all together,I can hear the selinoid work, and it acting like it wants to spin the bendix, but I get nothing, it acts like it's binding somewhere. I took the primary cover off and cheacked the pinion gear and that seems fine, I can push the armature shaft in with my finger and the piniongear will engage the clutch ring gear. Iam at my wits end here, I started building this bike back in Oct, and I cant get it running, I cant figure out why it won't start, and now I can't even get it to turn, Some one Please have a answer for me. Thanks guys.

Although it could be a bendix problem don't rule out an electrical problem.I have a friend that has a 85flh that had the same problem. the solinoid was draining to much electricity and was causing the starter to run to slow. try removing the starter cable at the solinoid and checking the voltage drop. I asume that the starter and the battery sre in good order

The battery is brand new, The starter a little older, Most of the folks I had talked to figured it was the selinoid, I gave up and broke down and took it to a local Guy, who strickly works on older Harleys. He's been good to me in the past with parts and info on how to fix things, So I figured it would be easier and quicker to just let him take care of her. I'll let you all know when I get her back what it was.. Thanks..
