Default Beating the 6th speed topic to death

I don't mean to beat this topic to death, but my '09 SG with a 103 big bore kit cruises at about 2000 RPM's in 5th gear till about 55 MPH. I read a lot on the forum that most riders cruise at about 2000-2100 RPM's for economy and performance, yet many say they shift into 6th only at higher RPM's. How many of you use your tach to determine when you'll go into 6th and at what RPM do you maintain before you drop down into 5th? Thanks.

Generally speaking, I don't cruise in any gear unless I'm at 2600 rpm's or higher...just seems to lug below those rpm's.

On flat roads, I will cruise at 2000-2100 all day long. Stock engines need more rpm, but once you build 'em you can run them down a bit lower. Hd will tell you to shift higher in the rpm range for the stock engines due to lack of torque and potential lugging of the engine. They are correct for stock applications.

From: 40 miles Northeast of Indy..
Default 26H cam made 6th gear usably and helped mileage,

Dalton is right on again as usual.

I don't have a tach so I use the speedo to gauge engine rpm's as I have a chart that show MPH vs RPM's.
For two years (16K) My stage 1 96(B)"motor would not pull 6th smooth till 65mph and then mileage dropped to 38-39 mpg. best mileage was always 5th at 50-55mph, 41 avg..

In march this yr I put in some 26h's and now 6th is actually a usable gear. I can ride two up at 60-65mph in 6th and it pulls it easy and doesn't feel like its laboring .

After logging over 1500 miles since the cams I have checked the mileage.

The first 3 tanks averaged about 38, 1st tank was 36, played quite a bit!!.

Next 4 tanks it was chilly here (50*-60*). and riding normal the best I got was 39mpg.

Now it has warmed up, temps 75*+, last 5 tanks 80% hiway & 20% city I'am getting 42-45mpg using 6th above 60mph (43mpg avg)..

Better than I used to get using 5th at 55mph. 41mpg avg.

Seems like riding in the 50*-60* weather used about 10% more fuel??

I almost called the tuner to redo the A/F below 40% throttle but now I think he got it right on with the 43mpg avg I'am getting....

I also went from Formula+ to belray Hypiod 75-140 in the tranny.
It is smoother Just wonder if lower weight (80-90) would be more suited for the 96" here in Ind..???
