Default Clutch hub wobble

04 883C

Is there suppose to be slop in the clutch hub? I have about in 1/8" in and out and about 1/16th" teeter in the hub. Doesn't seem right to me.

Maybe this'll explain better.

It may be that the clutch hub nut is loose.
If that is not it, I suggest you remove the clutch assembly, and check the mainshaft on the transmission, to see if it moves in and out. If the shaft is good, then it is probably the clutch hub bearing.

If the shaft moves in and out that much, there is a problem in the ball bearing in the trap door on the right side of the transmission.

The teeter is not that uncommon and you may find the "wobble" in most of the ones you have an occasion to fool with. All that holds the hub against the main shaft is a "lip" on the outer edge of the hub. The nut tightens against this lip and if there is any play between the splines on the hub and the splines on the shaft....it will wobble a bit. The wrenches that do this day-in-and-day-out will tell you this is pretty normal. I have heard of a few that will put locktite on the splines during installation, but I would not worry about that. It has been addressed on other forums and one tech. reported that 9 out of 10 he went into would have that wobble.

As far as that lateral play you have (in-and-out), I think I agree with Dan. That looks like a bit too much and sounds/looks a whole lot like a clutch hub nut. If that nut is loose, it will also aggravate the wobble. Maybe pull the right side cover and watch the main shaft nut that holds it in the trap door bearing. With that much play...you should see the shaft move in and out if it's the trap door bearing. If the shaft dosen't move....has to be a hub bearing...if the hub nut is tight. In other words...see if the play runs all the way through the main shaft.

Some wobble would be expectable but this seems extreme. Your suppose to rotate the primary chain to find the tight spot just to measure your 1/2 inch. If you look at the video you can see I can wobble the hub and the chain will move almost 3/8"

Actually I think I'm lucky to find this before things wore and possibly causing major $$$'s

I've ordered a Clymer before I go any further in.

I bought this thing a couple months ago and I can tell NOTHING was done in the way of maintenance.

The clutch cable was adjusted all they way out instead of adjusting it at the clutch hub. The primary chain had a lot of slack and I'm suspecting that's what caused premature wear on the hub/bearings.

Beautiful bike and it should run great when I'm done this winter.

Found out the reason for the slop/wobble in the clutch hub. Apparently who ever worked on the bike before I got it didn't put the washer on behind the nut.

The nut was bottoming out before tightening on the hub.

Now if I can figure out why the top ratchet spring keeps coming off .

There's some wear on the stop pin on the shift plate so it looks like I'll replace the shift shaft.
