This has surely been answered but i cant find it. My 1989 Springer FXSTS won't shift to neutral with eng running. It gradually got worse. It has 85-140 gear oil . Its not overfull. Clutch is adjusted. tell me your idea.....

90% of the time what your describing is a clutch adjustment. Make sure you are adjusting the clutch by using the complete procedure as described in the service manual for your bike.Starting with collapsing your cable completely before making the adjustment on your clutch.

As Mark suggests. Adjusting the clutch on bikes of that era (I have a 1990) requires a little care to get it just right. You need to balance adjusting the clutch with getting the cable right. On my bike I have very little slack in the cable. Get a factory service manual and no other!

I don't think that it's to thick, and even if it was finding N wouldn't be your problem, I would guess 99% clutch adjustment, adjust, ride, adjust, ride, then you should be in the sweet spot, if not repeat steps #1 & #2
