Removing the nut will not help you removed the bearing there is only 0.100-0.125in between the bearing and the end of the main shaft gear. I just did this and had to cut a groove across the bearing with a 4in cutting disc and split the bearing with a chisel, just a word of caution if you go down this route take it easy with the cutting disc and dont cut too deep. Once you have removed the bearing you can deal with replacing the nut.
Hope this helps
Yeah. I thought about cutting the race off. I just figured the nut would have been easier..... why is nothing ever easy.
Well, you were right. Those were threads inside of the nut.....
Why wouldn't HD make solid threads on the shaft??? There appeared to be a collar underneath the threads on the shaft...
I guess I gotta replace the trans main shaft, now. This was an expensive lesson.

It is not the mainshaft, it is the main drive gear. But before you buy any parts, disassemble the transmission so you can get an accurate idea of what you need.
Don`t panic, the transmission is easy to disassemble, and you can usually find used low mileage parts without spending a fortune.

Did you cut the bearing race off the mainshaft?
No. I managed to get the nut off without cutting the race off. It was quite the project, but I got it.
What else could I possibly need, other than the gear? Besides seals, and the like of course..
And I was just coming on here to edit my post from mainshaft, to mainshaft gear. Ya beat me to it.
You've been a HUGE help. I really appreciate it!
Edit: Any idea where to find parts? I just found a fear on ebay for $240!

I'm working on a 2007 glide with a 2 1/4" main shaft sprocket nut. I've broken a breaker bar and a 3/4" to 1/2" socket adapter. I've heated the nut liberally and attempted to turn the nut counter clockwise and all to no avail. My question is, can I use an impact gun to remove the nut? Or will it damage the transmission.
