Default softail improvement?

hi all,
being a newbie in the harkey, i picked up a 91 softail, all standard motor 88inch cubics.
i was wondering if anyone would know any tricks to improve the stock motor...
i got a good set of aftermarket pipes that's about it.
thanks for the tips

There's quite a few mods so it depends on what you want to spend. You can expand to 95" and, I think, even 103". Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, for some cheaper mods you can change the air cleaner, filter, intake... Other, more knowledgeable, people will be along soon to answer your question better than I can.

if it's a 91 softail, then you have the 80 inch evolution motor...not the twin cam 88. first mod to do would be stage 1. which includes: higher flowing exhaust, high flow air cleaner kit and rejet the carburetor.

I would at least change the cam(and INS bearing to a torington) modify the carb and a K&N filter. You do not want to stroke those cases.

I agree with Firedude. Air cleaner, 45 slow jet, 1988 1200 Sportster Jet Needle, good exhaust, and a mild cam. The cam bearing must be changed if it is still an INS bearing. The INS bearing has a tendency to go South with devastating results. Since you have to pay the labor to change the bearing anyway, the new cam would only be about 100.00 more.

The largest you can go with this engine and stay reliable is about 88 inches. After that you have to start machining, and that's not good.

Regards,

Bill

I have a 94 EVO FXSTC. If you want some ponies and some torque, try this set up:

SE 9.5:1 heads
Weisco 9.5:1 pistons
Andrews EV-27 cam and adj. pushrods
Crane Hi-4 single fire ignition and coil
Yost Power tube
Python III slash cut exhaust
Jims Big axle tappets

We bored mine .030 over and used an S&S flywheel assembly.

On the dyno, we pulled 92 ponies at the wheel and 101 lbs of torque.

If it's a sleeper in a street light stampede you want, this is a set up that does it!

I also have a 94 FXSTC. The only mods I've had done are a rejetted carby and exhaust baffles removed. I'm happy with the result !!!
Ride safe.
