?? Winter Jacket ??

Hey folks.. may be the wrong section to ask.. I live in NC and ride year round.. My issue is staying warm when temps are 40 and below.. I found I can stay warm using a thermal "union suit" but then am burning up at my destination. I thought about getting an FXRG which I've read many good reviews, but heard they are very heavy (not a fan of heavy riding gear). So, looking for a light weight but warm solution.. My coat is a HD Canvas 3:1 which suits me well most of the time.. again.. just those 40 and below days. I'm thinking of a gerbings jacket liner... but hate to spend the $$ to wear only a few times a year...

Any thoughts?

I just wear long underwear jeans a sweatshirt and a lined leather jacket for riding in cold weather, but my commute is only 10 miles. I will on occasion wear chaps.
