The Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Durango is not for the faint at heart. Try to ride it in the morning. The afternoon thunderstorms can make it a nasty ride, cold rain, hail, slick roads, etc.
Highway 160 East out of Durango is one of my favorites, scenic and very comfortable.
Others have already given you the lowdown on the whats to see and do. Ouray is our weekend Colorado getaway. Here is the p lace to stay in Ouray. RiversEdge Motel. Very clean and picturesque at reasonable rates (for Ouray). Biker friendly and our home in Ouray.
Ride up just past Ouray to Ridgway and eat at the True Grit Cafe. A brick wall in the cafe used to be outside and was used in the movie with John Wayne. The park across the street was used in the movie as well. This year we stayed a night in Lake City. It's a cute town with good places for breakfast. We stayed in a great log cabin right next to the river with waterfall views and had a campfire. Great! (But not cheap)
Thanks Bill, I did the MDH last year on my way home from Sturgis and Yellowstone. Then I headed over to Pagosa Springs and met an old friend for a cup of coffee and then headed south. I told my friends if my wife had been riding with me I would have had to have left her up there as she would not have ridden that road. I don't know how they pave it. The paving runs out there to nothing. Not even any dirt outside of the asphalt just air.
I will look at the Rivers Edge Motel, thanks hoethree.
Thanks Captain, Will definitely have to check out the café.
Ouray brings back a few memories. Was probably 10 years ago at least but the wife and I spent the night in a small hotel in Ouray. Was planning on a quiet night. Walked across the street for dinner and a few beers, then headed back to the hotel. Met some fellow rider there from our hometown. Started having a few beers with them. The basketball playoffs were on TV and our team ( Mavericks ) were playing, so we put the TV by the window, watched and had a few more beers. Finally went to bed around midnight but was awakened about 1 AM by flashing lights, diesel engines, etc. One of the people we met that night had had a heart attack and was sent to the hospital. We finally got back to sleep around 2 or so and had to get up pretty early the next morning to head south. Since we had consumed more beverages than we should have, I wasn't feeling my best. My biggest memory was no guard rail and very steep drop offs and with my stomach not being in the best shape, I didn't enjoy the first few miles that am.
We found a really cool place in Silverton for breakfast. I remember my wife saying the same thing about feeling queasy with the road conditions that morning.
Got a call later that day that the fellow with the heart attack was going to be OK, but it really screwed up the trip.
Yes the Durango train is worth it, reserve early as they are sold out the day of. At least during that time of year. Here is the link to our road trip from last year with pics if it helps any?
