Im thinking of taking my first rd trip.It will be from ny to tenn. to see a buddy of mine that just returned from afganastain. I ride a 2012 sreetbob my qustions are, 1 is this to much of a ride for my first long trip.(I will be going solo).
2 how should i prep for this journey (what to pack on/for the bike)
ive been riding for 20 yrs but this is my first BT and since ive moved away from my riding budddys dont take to many long trips
I have done this trip in 2013 with my Dyna FLD. I had 8 days to do it. I left my house in Paramus NJ around 12 noon hit highway till I get in PA then back roads my first stop was Front Royal VA. Next day 7 am I was on Skyline Dr took my time I rode skyline drive and BRP for 2 days. You have to take your time make sure you stop often. As far as what to pack 2 pairs of shorts 3 shirts and undies. Must pack flip flop as well. I wear well ventilated Klim's waterproof pants and jacket every time I put my leg over the bike. It doesn't matter how long(how hot) or how short(how cold) I wear full gear. Must take tire plug and CO2 cartridge, take your credit card cell phone. As for the bike make sure get fresh oil and tires. Have safe ride.
Lots of good advice has already been given. Many years ago I jumped on my sporty and took of on a "day" ride and wound up going from TN over to SC... in a round about sort of way. I was young and stupid, and had a blast.
Ride as far as you are comfortable with, if you find yourself getting tired, stop and stay the night. You'll feel better the next day and be in a much better mood when you hit your destination.
Like has been said; pack heavier object down and the lighter stuff to the top. Keep jackets and rain gear handy.
Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the time with your friends when you get there. This can be more than just a "trip", it can be an adventure.
Ride safe and thank your friend for his service for me.
