The thing I like about Bubbler and Spotwalla, is I don't have to do anything once I have the timeframe set up in Spotwalla. I configure Bubbler to start anytime I turn the phone on and it automatically uploads to Spotwalla. You can use Bubbler to send multiple types of message emails such as food, gas stops and even pictures. With Spotwalla you can configure what info to display such as speed and time. There is no time expiration, I can set it for a an hour or a year. I like the Spotwalla site as the trips are archived and I can go back and look at the route and fondly remember....

If you research the Spot Tracker and all it can do, Bubbler does almost the same without the costs and without the added security of calling for help without cell coverage. If I did a ton of distance solo rides and hikes, I would be all over Spot Tracker.

Default MotionX-GPS

I used this app (iPhone version) during a 10K mile trip last year. I would send my track at the end of each day to my wife and daughter. It shows your location as well as your running time route rode and average speed, top speed and other info. Worked fine for me.

Default Look at DeLorme inReach

I (my wife actually) need one of these for my son for a wilderness backpacking trip he is taking in late spring. I looked at Spot vs DeLorme, and will buy the DeLorme due to the ability to buy coverage on a monthly basis rather than by the year. It also has better text messaging when coupled with a phone, but OP didn't ask for that. Location updates every 10 minutes are in the discount packages. I will most likely get it from REI.

I already do both the picture/facebook thing and use FindMyFriends(only Apple). After he gets done with it, I plan on taking with me on long trips. I spent the night in a ditch in Arkansas last fall when my sporty battery failed. Satellite communication (texting) at affordable pricing when you are out of cell coverage (i have both ATT and Verizon) seems like a reasonable expense.
