US 1 down to the keys is a two lane road. Weekend and holidays are MURDER. And to top it off somebody always forgets to tie down thier boat properly and it falls off the trailer...can you imagine the mess that causes on a two lane bridge. If there is a wreck youll die..they cant even get an ambulance to the victims, they have to bring a chopper in...another thing, drunks seem to always walk into traffic and get ran over...Id travel on weekdays in and out if I were you and avoid holidays and bring lots of $$$. Other than that the overseas hwy is a beautiful ride....thee green colored gulf on the right and the blue atlantic on the left.....when you drive south of Florida City you feel like you left the country almost. Keep your woman close by and beware of people buying you jello shooters.
LOL.
You make it sound like the apocalypse. I'm going to steal this scenario and post it everywhere to try to scare the damn tourists away!!!
In truth, I've been going to the keys for decades and have never seen the perfect storm laid out above. On a bad day it can take 5 hours to make Key West.
On a good day it can take 5 hours to make Key West, but allows you time to stop to eat and for a road pop or 2 along the way.
June will be hot in Florida until you pass by Homestead. Things will start to get a bit cooler because of the breeze coming off the water body unless you're stuck in traffic and dealing with the heat from the engine. My GF and I vacationed therre for a week in July 2012. Only rained once on July 4th as the weather was nice the whole time. Spent a lot of the time in pool during the day and spent every night dining at Mallory Square enjoying the sunset.
LOL.

Didnt mean to do that.....I love the keys, especially Islamorada to Big Pine. Im hope not to scare anyone away...the drive is nice, bike or convertible, fishing, diving, turtle soup, conch fritters, and super laid back locals. But there is a disproportionate amount of idiots there. The statement on the jello shooters stands, sometimes the bartender is in on it toi.😈
