Planning a clockwise trip around L. Superior in August. Thinking of stops in Grand Marais, Marathon and Sault Ste. Marie. Recommendations of places to stay/eat/drink? Thanks.
Best Western in Grand Marais is very nice. There isn't anything in Marathon other than a small motel out on 17. Salut Sainte Marie has lots of options. You will love the ride. We are going in August counterclockwise. Have fun.

Actually a couple places in Marathon as well as the one on 17. Any advantage going counter clockwise vs clockwise? Prevailing wind? If not, I'll waive when we pass.
We will look for your wave. No advantage that I know of other than the scenic views are about 12 feet closer going clockwise. We are going the other way due to scheduling and the Michigan HOG rally in Marquette. When we went through Marathon a few years ago we couldn't even find a place to eat. LOL.

We try to get up to the Duluth area once a year. In Grand Marais we like to eat at the Crooked Spoon Café. They have a delicious Pastrami sandwich. On the Wisconsin side if you come through Bayfield, WI, try the Pickled Herring Restaurant. They have a Steak BLT sandwich with Jalapeno mayonnaise that is incredible. Hope you have a great trip.
being from MI I have done the loop a number of times. We stay in Houghton/hancock, just north of thunder bay and wawa ont. regardless which clock direction we ride.
I don't recall which hotel we stayed at in Houghton but there are several. North of Thunder Bay we stayed at an old railroad station that was converted to a mom and pop hotel with small restaurant attached. In Wawa Ont we stayed at the Wawa Moter Inn, about a 30' goose in the front yard.
If you wind up in Munising the Superior Motel is great, we stayed there in 2013. The Dogpatch restaurant is a good place to eat. You can also take a sunset pictured rock cruise that is a awesome way to see the pictured rocks.
Oooo that is a great idea for the start of my epic road trip we could do lake superior around then down the river road then jump over to route 66... I may have to take more time off from work.
