Cabot Trail in Cape Breton
Just got back from a 1,500 mile trip up the coast of Maine, through New Brunswick, to Prince Edward Island, into Nova Scotia and up to the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. My 2014 Softail Deluxe had only 2,000 miles on it when I left home. This eastern part of Canada was beautiful country to ride in. The weather was not so great--rain on 5 out of 7 days, but never a total washout. The day I rode the Cabot Trail was just perfect - 180 miles around the loop enjoying scenic ocean views and climbing mountains and with hairpin turns. Very exciting riding for me.
I'm a fairly new rider, but did the trip alone. I faced many challenges, the worst of them was hard rain on the Trans Canada Highway on two separate days, and very strong winds on the day I was leaving Cape Breton. I feel like I got way more than one week's experience during this trip. Lots of road construction along the way. The experience of traveling alone and stopping in the late afternoon to find a motel made me nervous, but it all worked out.
All in all, I came home feeling very accomplished with my solo journey. There were many times when something could have gone wrong along the way and the ironic thing was on the ferry ride to my home island in Maine, I dropped the bike as I was getting ready to start it and ride off the boat. Less than 5 miles from home. I've been on and off the ferry many, many times before and I think I just suffered a lack of concentration when I picked my left foot up off the deck to put the bike in neutral to start it. Kickstand was already up and the bike just started to go over and there was nothing I could do, but fall with it. Luckily, I was not hurt and the bike suffered only a little ding on the small headlamp ring, a $35 replacement part from the Harley dealer is on the way.
About dropping the bike: I think a motorcycle is a bit like the proverbial high-maintenance girlfriend (or boyfriend)...you have to pay attention to them all the time, or they make you pay.
