Poor sleep is miserable camping.
A good pad and bag are golden here. I pull a trailer, so can add some comforts as needed but are still at the 'backpackable' level, like a Big Agnes bag and a 3 man, 4-season tent.
I'm testing out soon a catalytic alcohol heater that does well in my shop, but I often wonder about the Zippo hand warmers for any smaller tent.

Coleman Catalytic heaters work great and are pretty safe if you follow the directions. Used one many times at many rallies with never an issue. Small propane tank burns for 8 hours.

If you have a campfire, heat up a good sized rock. Wrap it in a towel and take it to bed. Serious.

Do you have a double walled tent, the kind that has a rain fly that goes almost all the way to the ground on the outside? That should give you a good insulating layer to warm the tent.

Fart....? A lot. I have always been too scared to try any heater inside a tent. Except for the old sheep herder's tents my grandpa had. Wood stove in those...nice and toasty!
Just done the super cold rated sleeping bags. They did good, but not worth a damn when you get out of them.

A significant other. Or just other. Much safer than open flames. Maybe.

There are times when I would have opted for the open flames.

we been serious about the rocks....
'Scuse me for not re reading...but how big is your tent? The propane type need room to be "over there" in my opinion, and can be used till bed time. Then turn it off. Reverse in am. Light it, give a few minutes to make it non but chilling then dress.

A two person tent should warm up easily with two people inside it getting some cardio...

otherwise a good sleeping bag and pad should do fine. just mind the R value on the items that you buy. maybe a fleece blanket if you like.

There are only three things that I do in a tent while camping.
1. Make warmth with a "friend"
2. change clothes.
3. Sleep.

warm up by the fire and then head to bed...?

If it has a flame and is inside the tent I'd be sure to add a Carbon Monoxide detector as well. A father and son were killed this spring up by the Maroon Bells from an in tent heater.
We used to use hot water bottles on real cold nights while hunting from a tent. They pack down to nothing but last quite a while and if nothing else give a bit of a psychological boost while crawling into a cold bag.
A gas lantern is a good piece of kit for heat and light as well if you have room.
