Camping Roadside
I would like to take a trip this summer to Montana, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Sturgis camping and fishing on the way. My entire life I have wanted to try fly fishing and have never had the chance in a mountain stream. Is there places that you can camp and with a motorcycle that are not on the main routes, sort of back woods areas where you could camp and fly fish at the same time.
Earlier in my life (1986) I travelled around the U.S. and CAN for 2 years on my motorcycle camping and working a little here and there but never made it into the mountains, I camped in state parks and on some quiet back routes where ever I found a little spot to set up my tent or bed roll in the nicer weather. I never had any problems but am a bit of a bigger guy and a little ruff looking helped, the last few years going to Sturgis (I like taking the smaller roads once I get west of Minneapolis) I have not seen anyone camping in any of the small county camp sites or just along the road side in out of the way areas like I had seen and done when I was younger.
Anybody ride and camp like this, I have not for a long time because of not having enough time off work and instead drive hard and fast and stay in motels now for the convenience and saving time, but that over now I am taking this summer off. If any of you have pics of your camping trip or care to share your expirences of places you have found I would luv to read about them.
I have been reading stories on this forum for a while now and have just set up a profile so I could join in on your conversations.

Welcome aboard Alex. I love to camp on the motorcycle but am too chicken to roadside camp. Besides I like to have a fire there's nothing like a couple drinks by the fire at night!! I have recently started messing with adventure riding, which is similar to what you are looking for. Try the site advrider.com I was able to enjoy a couple very remote camp sites in CO last year. One is located between Aspen and Twin Lakes. It was about 2miles off rte 82 right on Fork Lake Creek. It was amazing and would fit the bill you are looking for but not on a HD. I'm sorry I don't have any good intel that would work for the HD.

We stayed in Dillon, MT and rode thru Virginia City on way to Livingston, MT.
It was advertised as the fly fishing capital of the world. Saw a lot of places like you are looking for.
Beautiful country.

We did some fly fishing in the Big Horn mountains in 2013. Find an outfitter in the area for which flies are working (match the hatch), where to fish and local and state regulations. Not much unregulated anything anymore. Here we are in the Big Horns near Sheridan, WY in 2013. Tom with a nice one.

Four piece Orvis fly rod packed behind the tourpak.

You can see the end of the fly rod sticking out just above the noise maker.

Alex...welcome aboard the forum. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife website has great information on many of the state parks through Colorado that would welcome you. You'd probably feel safer camping at a state park though I don't think you'll have any problems along most roads in our state. Also, there are a number of well-maintained KOA's in Colorado. I've camped at many of them and there are always a good number of bike riders camping on their lawns (the warm showers at KOA's are their best feature). If you come through Salida, CO there is a fly fishing outfitter called Ark Anglers that I recommend. If you've never fly fished before they'll spend time with you, outfit you with their own gear and you can spend 1/2 day in a dory fishing on the Arkansas River (longest Blue Ribbon fishery in the U.S.). If it was me I'd chose KOA first (showers!) and then state parks or other private campgrounds. Enjoy your ride.
