What route are you planning? All Canada or dropping into Northern USA?

Wow! The possibilities are nearly endless! I rode to Ottawa and back from my home in Fernie, BC. I chose to do much of it in Northern US on US Hwy 2. At the time, 2013, I found gas to be cheaper, beer to be cheaper and motels and restaurants to be cheaper than in Canada. And I found the ride much less boring across the prairies.

How much time are you allowing yourselves?

If you have time, I'd recommend getting off the TC at Hope and follow Hwy 3 to Castlegar, North to New Denver, east to Kaslo, and south to Creston. Then drop into the states and follow US 2 to just past Kalispell, go over Going to Sun Road in Glacier Park. You can then drop down to I95, stay on 2, or come back into Canada to 3 and continue East with 3 joining 1 in Medicine Hat.

Have fun.

If you take the Fraser Canyon, consider taking Highway 8 East from Spences Bridge to Merritt, then 5A North to Kamloops, it's a beauty ride and you'll meet back up with the Trans Canada in Kamloops.

The route through New Denver and Kaslo that the other guy mentions is great too, it's all good advice so far.

Have to agree with Poppa, I made the trip both ways last year, totally through Canada, unfortunately I was unable to go through the USA. Through Manitoba and Saskatchewan , not much to see. Northern Ontario can be nice, especially along the north and east shores of Lake Superior but only if you catch the right weather. It can be very cool and damp especially along the North Shore through Thunder Bay to Sault Saint Marie.

If it was me I would consider crossing at Waterton Lakes National Park but it would leave me in a real dilemma, I wouldn't want to miss Going to the Sun Road.

I love to show you around Hamilton but I'll be on the road myself. If you do go through the US we may be passing each on the road cus I'll be going the other way.
Have a great trip.

Rogers Pass on the No. 1 is a good ride but I also prefer this route on Hwy 3 from Osoyoos, Castlegar, Creston, Cranbrook then through Fernie and the Crowsnest Pass. More scenery and less traffic. If the trip up to New Denver to Kaslo is out of the way Hwy 3 between Castlegar and Creston is worth the ride too.

Personally, I would head south to the US once I hit Alberta, but I live in Sask so wide open prairies do not appeal to me. The prairies is the only reason I have cruise control. ;0

Glacier Park for the Going to the Sun Road then over to Yellowstone to hit the Beartooth Hwy are both well worth the side trip.
