This summer a friend and I will be taking a two week trip through the northeastern part of the country around the 4th of July,to finish off the lower 48.
The route we're thinking about is heading from Ohio up to Maine, and then down to Virginia hitting every state along the way.
If anyone has any advice on routes, and places to see, or if you want to ride along for day and show us your great state, leave a reply.
Two places I can recommend you visit. Cannon Mountain Tramway, 260 Tramway Dr, Franconia, NH and Watkins Glen State Park, 1009 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen, NY. There are 18 waterfalls in this state park in a 1.5 mile long gorge. Take the bus for $5 to the top of the gorge and walk down the gorge, not up it. Not sure how much water will be running through the gorge that time of year. An out of the way place to stay is Rodeway Inn 3527 Watkins Rd, Horseheads, NY. Good prices, and there are plenty of restaurants within two miles of the motel. Motels in Watkins Glen are hard to come by especially if there is a car race at the time you are there. Have a meal at the Village Marina Bar & Grill in Watkins Glen. Food is pretty good but the view of the lake is unbelievable. If you like wine, there are winery's every 4-5 miles along the lake.
This was basically the route we did a year ago in June 14 days....we had hotel reservation for all the stops....pretty good sightseeing trip.....6bikes/couples. Had a blast!!!!!
You can't go wrong with almost any road in N Central PA, where I live. I never get tired of riding up here. If you're on interstate 80 from OH to PA, look at 66 between Clarion PA & Kane PA, up to route 6. Google Kinzua Bridge State Park, and the PA Grand Canyon, both on route 6 in PA, and would be on your way to go through central upstate NY, Watkins Glen State Park, and the Finger Lakes area that has lots of wineries & tours. Work your way up to Watertown NY, and head east on route 3 to Lake Placid. Stop at Whiteface Mountain, and ride the gondola to the top. Then there's a ferry across Lake Ticonderoga & into VT. Maybe some New Englanders will pick it up from here! Sounds like a fun trip.
In NY go through the Lake Placid area down to Lake George and run rt 22 down through to Westchester. Below that maybe you want to see NY City but the ride through upstate NY is nice. I live here if I can help.
