i'm on a two week trip. The next coupe of days take me from Cheyenne to Scottsdale. I enjoy both the interstates and back roads. Mapquest tells me it's about 14 hours on the slabs and 20 off of it. Out west, I've noticed that even the interstates have beautiful scenery.
Some interstates do have good scenery, but if I have a choice it's always the two lane.
I would get over to Montrose Colorado, any number of ways, then take US 550 south, US 160 east from Durango and then to Scottsdale. US 89 south from Sedona through Jerome Az. is an awesome ride. US 550 is called the million dollar Hiway for a reason. A bit longer, but a really great ride.

I personally like the ride from Gunnison, Colorado to South Fork, Colorado. A couple of great climbs, nice road and beautiful scenery. From South Fork, head over to southern Utah and then down 89.
On a side note, don't take the interstate through Denver. It is a madhouse that can last for hour hours just to travel 60 miles.
