I live in the Texas panhandle and have ridden rt. 66. Not near all of it, but enough to know that there are far better rides to spend you time on. I am in the naysayer column on rt. 66. Much of it from OKC to California is really just I-40 with a few side excursions.

If its a matter of scenery/twisties, I agree - there are better rides.
I kinda enjoy the history/kitsch/ etc. To each his/her own.
Ok thanks...
I'm asking because some guys told me that 66 is not a great ride anymore.
So my best pick would be to go West crossing Canada through the rockies and south to California and then zigzaging West to East through the desert and mountains...
If that is the way you're going to go I'd try to be going through the Canadian Rockies as close to the 3rd week of July, warmest time of the year, because it can get cool there. Three rides I wouldn't miss on your way home would be like others have mentioned #34 through Rocky Mountain National Park, the Colorado 550 million dollar and last and definitely not least is #12 through southern Utah.
Have a great trip!
There is a piece of Route 66 that goes through Amboy California where you can get this picture. I got it last last year when I was heading north from Palm Springs and did a desert run through Joshua Tree and Mojave.
Not to many places anymore where they put the Route markers right on the pavement.....
