Thanks for the link to the other thread. Just read through a portion of it and we will be in some of the same places so I will have to go back and read more carefully and take some notes.

I didn't think it was two hours down to Big Sur from Monterey. Hope Google maps doesn't get me in a bind with timeframes. Trying to only put between 5-6 hours of seat time per day so we can stop plenty along the way.

I may have misled you. Big Sur is 1 hour from Monterey on Hwy 1. The 2 hours I was referring to was the time you should allow for Pt. Lobos Reserve. Ride around the reserve to various points, take a short hike, then on your way to Big Sur (40 minutes from Pt. Lobos).
Pt. Lobos is a protected coast area. You will enjoy it. Well worth the 2 hours or less.

and here is my short story on our trip down from Portland

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/road-...the-pch-2.html

Architect always has good advice and the one thing we appreciated was the riding on the ocean side of the road. On bikes, it is easier to turn in and not cross traffic. tillammok cheese, the seal cave and the various lighthouses were great stops. avoid the glass beach like the plaque and in fact, don't even stop in Ft bragg.
The heritage House south of Mendocino was a great place to stay over night and into the next day. My wife peruses all of the cheap hotel stays while we are riding and found the little gem. very pleased with most of our stops. hiway 1 is a slow hiway so it takes a while to go 100 miles in many places.

I use "hoteltonight" app for impromptu hotel stays. Last minute unsold rooms go cheap...

Thanks again for the added insight. We are now equipped with Butler Maps of all three states. I think we will try to take in more of Oregon now and put off trying to make it into Washington for another trip. We will have to carefully check Oregon and California road closure reports to make sure some of the roads are actually open when we are making our way across. Just spoke to a nice gentleman at the Harbicks Country Inn in Oregon and he told me that NF-19 is closed down by the hot springs due to a mudslide.

Forest fires are the second concern/problem.
