Well all, the wife and I have thought we like to go to Red Lodge, MT. Ride the Beartooth Hwy. Then maybe shoot over to Yellowstone. May, June to cold for these locations ? Thought we'd stop half way up in Iowa on the way up and back. Nice (and cheap) places to stay ? Any and all suggestions would be a blessing. thanks. Bob
Got to be a bit more specific on the route...but, you can always stop by Le Claire, Iowa and see the Frank at the "Antique Archeology" from the tv show, nice little store....
Sorry 'bout that Giacomo56. Comin' from Waynesboro, Va. Then I64W to I35N thru Dayton, OH to I70W. In Indianapolis hop on I74W to a little hop on I80W. Then 29N to Sioux Falls to I90W. Then 34-90-212 to Red Lodge. But I see from what Ramblin5 says, isn't a good time for motorcycle till maybe end of summer ?
Ok you will be crossing the Mississippi river near Danvenport, which has a very nice riverboat casino with a cheap hotel attached to it and restaurant.....FYI we did Beartooth the last week of july ( the week before Surgis ) but some snow still hadn't melt, not too cold.......but what a ride !!!!!! We stayed in Red Bank at the Alpine.....very nice motorcycle friendly motel/hotel....cute town to boot.

Or stop during Sturgis to see Frank. I have seen him several times at the campground where I stay.
I love Beartooth. Last year after Sturgis, I camped at Cody. Rode over to Red Lodge one day. The next week, it was closed for a day due to snow.
Another thumbs up for the Alpine Lodge. It's on the north end of town.
I've been over Beartooth maybe a dozen times. Last year in late June the snow was still 25' deep in one spot but it doesn't matter. If it's open it's open. Just dress for a cool ride and remember, watch the weather. It can get closed temporarily any day of the summer.
Consider a route that takes you over the Bighorns either at Buffalo or Sheridan,WY. Then the Chief Joseph which is north of Cody.
Myself? I hate going through Yellowstone. Too many tourists and traffic.
Take your warm riding gear. A couple years ago we were up there after Sturgis. It was in the low 60's in Cody when we took off road up thru Yellowstone and it got up into the 70's. Started riding the Beartooth and the wind picked up and the temps dropped into the upper 40's. This was in August. One year we were camping in the park and it dropped down in the upper 20's at night. I love Yellowstone and the traffic wasn't that bad most of the time that we were there. The sites up there are worth a bit of hassle. Take of early and you can miss a lot of the traffic. If you go thru Buffalo stop at the Dash Inn and get the rib plate.
Have fun.
