Hey...planning on leaving for Sturgis from Minneapolis area on August 3rd and riding straight through. Anyone out there either leaving from my area on that day or passing through? Looking for someone to ride out with.

Nice! Safe travels. I90 is definitely one of the most direct routes so that's not a bad idea.

For us 1st timers coming from the northeast is it better to stay on 80 then head north 380 vs 90 though Chicago? I'v been caught in Chicago traffic before and it's NO JOKE! From what I see 80 to 380 north only adds an hour which can be far less if you get caught up in Chicago! .... thoughts?

Avoid stop and go traffic at all costs - especially around Chicago. Ask me how I know.
Remember this: if you ABSOLUTELY MUST transit through a downtown metropolitan area, for whatever reasons, you still get to pick the time. Go to bed early, get up at 2, and ride through the madness at 3 AM when most of the crazies aren't on the highway.
When you get there, look me up and I'll buy you a beer. I'm wearing a black leather vest, black jeans, riding boots, a black helmet, riding on a black Harley. You can't miss me!

Assuming you mean 380 in Cedar Rapids IA??
I-80 absolutely sucks thru IN around Gary into Chicago area...it sucks so bad it needs to be experienced. Best time to hit may be a Sunday....294 loops you around the outskirts though there are other options to go around as well.
