Rookie Iron Butt
A backrest helps A LOT. I also use forward foot pegs so I can straighten out my legs a little (I've got a bum knee). Stay hydrated. I always pack cold water. I don't eat much on long rides, Cliff Bars, granola, etc., works well for me. I have a cut-down windshield on a '92 Ultra, it helps deflect bugs. I use ear plugs, so I'm really not able to listen to music, podcasts, etc. I get off of the bike at least 5-10 minutes every two hours. I keep a fully charged phone with a battery backup, but have it stashed in a saddlebag- don't want it to distract me. I typically don't use electronic screens (google maps, Garmin, etc) while riding as the mounts take up valuable space, and they are very hard to see in full sun. I still use electronic mapping, I just wait until I'm off the bike to consult it. I still use paper road maps! It's amazing how many places have poor data reception. Lots of lens cleaning wipes and headbands to keep sweat out of my eyes. Pack medicated powder to keep that heat rash under control, and if you're subject to piles don't forget the preparation H. Pack some kind of Ibuprofin/ Tylenol/ Aspirin, whatever your preference. Know a few hours beforehand where you'll stop for the day, and have a backup location. It sucks riding into the night at the end of a 500 mile day because all of the motels are full. And an old timer once told me about bike trips: "You're gonna get hot, you're gonna get cold, and you're gonna get wet." Plan accordingly. Hope this helps.
