Thanks guys for the help. We ended up just doing Apache Trail again. It was nice to get out and ride - especially considering there is a foot of snow covering our driveway back home and more on the way. And 17 degrees. I made the mistake of taking Scottsdale Rd down to Main and taking a left. It's a lot farther to Apache Junction than I thought, but we got to see some...uh....interesting stuff along the. The rail system is new since I was here last. And the construction kind of a pita. But again, we'll take it considering it was 70 and sunny.
Apache Trail was REALLY busy. I was surprised as it was a Tuesday afternoon. But looking at all the grey haired drivers I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the retirees are out in force looking to sight see. And sight see they did - at a leisurely pace. It was kind of bummer but the sights were beautiful and we took it all in. Had a beer at the "Ghost Town" and another with some tacos up at Tortilla Fats. Considered trying the dirt road as it looked smooth at the start, but Cheryl said "No dice" so we turned around like everyone else. Sounds like we made the right decision. All told we got in 130 miles.
We have a few more days here and we'll check out the higher elevations in the rental car. If you see a dorky looking guy with a cute blonde in a black mercedes convertible, give us a wave!
PS - awesome region you guys live in! We really like it here. We're going to start looking into investment properties with the hopes of snow birding it until retirement.

I'm considering riding Apache Trail past Tortilla Flats and all the way to Roosevelt Lake. I hear it's a bit dicey for road bikes, but the Google map images don't look so bad.
I wish I would have seen this thread sooner as you were in my neck of the woods. In any event, it sounds like you missed the storm that rolled through last week. We had snow in north Scottsdale if you can believe that. Oh, and as far as Tortilla Flats is concerned, I have taken the road all the way to Roosevelt on a Road King, but I’ll never try it again.

Yeah we hit the perfect window it seems. Had one day of light rain and we hiked Camelback. Overall had a fantastic time. We plan on returning often - hopefully permanently.

Well we hope to call you neighbor soon. We really like the area. This guy has a pretty sweet setup by the trailhead. He has a few bikes in that room with the windows.

Keep me posted on the property search. That place in the picture is in Paradise Valley. Paradise Valley is where the millionaires and billionaires live, but you can find more reasonably priced property in Scottsdale, just a few miles east. Scottsdale is a wonderful city with an excellent night life, dining, shopping, parks, biking trails, etc.
