Getting ready in May to make a trip here in Va to the Key West. I have did some research seems I can go to Lorton VA catch a train, load the bike and travel by rail to the middle of Fld.
Leaves in the afternoon arrives around 8 am. Anyone done it, , how was loading of the bike what do u need to bring any info thanks
A co worker of mine just did the auto train trip with her Freewheeler trike a few weeks ago. First they almost dropped her trike off the platform loading it on the train, (they put your bike on a pallet that holds 2 bikes or 1 trike, they didn't strap her trike down and it started to roll off the pallet) then the train had mechanical problems and they had a long delay, so instead of getting the nice meal on the train that they paid for they were given cheese pizza and sat outside near the train and while they were eating their cold cheese pizza the Amtrak workers dumped the ******** on the train.
She did have a good time in Florida once they finally arrived.
I'm planning a trip to Florida is August and was thinking about taking the train down, now I'm thinking about riding down through tail of the dragon instead.
If you use the search function on hdforums with keyword "amtrak" but make sure to select "titles only" there will be several posts.
If you go on youtube and enter "amtrak motorcycle" there will be several videos.
Make sure you put your security settings for travel/haul vice normal, or you'll have a dead battery by the time you arrive. I've had friends ride the train south from Lorton and swear it's a good deal.
I did it once. Was on DC for a memorial dedication. started pouring with the weather map showing no let up for days along my route back to Florida so we put the bike on the train and rode south.
I'd do it again. Bar car, got a bunk compartment, next thing I know I'm in Orlando 2 hours from home. Dry.

I have to update my post.
Another friend posted on Facebook last night from Key West. A group of 9 of them took the train down to FL then rode to Key West. One of them is on a trike. They said everything went smoothly, food was OK, not bad, but not great either.
