Default Hells Canyon

Any problems for a loaded two-up bagger on route 39 through Hells Canyon - unpaved sections, gravel, road condition, etc.? Looking to do a McCall to Joseph day on a summer trip.

Thanks.

That’s actually a Forest Service road and is the Wallowa Mountain Loop road. Typically in the West FS roads aren’t paved but this one is. Hooked up with it coming from Baker City, OR a couple years ago to ride up to Joseph. Nice road and as I recall mostly 45-50 MPH. Since you’re just doing McCall to Joseph you’ll have plenty of time to check out the area.

It's been awhile for me, but last time I went it was pretty decent road. A few potholes but nothing you couldn't see ahead & miss.
From where are you heading to McCall ot of curiosity?

Thanks, always better to hear from those that have done it. Been on too many secondary roads that started out ok but went sideways in a hurry.

Probably starting in Ketchum to end the day in McCall but still in the planning stage.

We rode it in 2017 based out of Wallowa Lake. The stretch from the Halfway side is good curvy road, lots of fun. From Hells Canyon Overlook down towards Joseph it's narrower and windier with a few potholes, but all paved and pretty fun riding. We were warned to watch out for log trucks, always a good idea in the mountains.

We rode this area last year. Roads like this make you wonder why people think The Dragon is so good. We had a day of riding twisties not just 16miles of the Dragon.

There is a Tram ride at Wallowa Lake that is the bomb. Ride the tram to the top of the mountain and have breakfast with a view to remember. Biscuits & Gravy were pretty good. Like others have posted, you’ll love that stretch or road. It is paved but you can dam near rub your shoulders on the limbs in th corners. Have fun
