Planning on leaving northern IL on Friday after work and working our way towards Memphis. We will arrive in Memphis Saturday afternoon sometime. Several in our group want to experience Beale St. I myself, love Beale St! So much fun!
Anyway I am wondering about the area around the Medical Center Midtown. Thinking of staying there since it is a short cab ride to Beale St and the rates are more reasonable. Anyone have any specific information on that area? I know it is Memphis, dirty, and full of crime so my question really is, is this area less full of crime than other areas?
I am looking for some decent roads that lead from Jackson, HUmboldt and north of there into Memphis.
Also we will be leaving Memphis on Sunday morning, heading back home. Any good roads on the far west side of Tennessee (west of 51) that we should consider? I am planning on riding the ferry at Hickman KY and then heading north from there.
Thanks in advance for your input. We are only in Memphis one night and Beale St is the main objective for that night.
I would not advise staying anywhere near Midtown Memphis overnight. Maybe someone else can give you some good feedback as far as lodging goes. I avoid Memphis like the plague myself. Hwy 70 from Jackson to Brownsville to Memphis is a good route and will take you right by the original Gus's Fried Chicken in the little community of Mason. The BBQ joint (Bozos) almost directly across the street is also very good.
We stayed a few years ago a couple of blocks off Beale St at the Holiday Inn across from the Peabody. Parked the bikes in the parking garage. Spent the night on Beale.in Blues Café I think was the name. Had a blast. As it got late, cops put up barricades. I think they were using metal detectors as well. No issues. Did Graceland the next day.
