Just got back from a trip there. Took this short video near Mt. Evans last Wednesday May 29th. Was watching temperature go down. It was 35 degrees when I turned around. Didn't want to risk ice. Most of that was all melted the following Sunday when I went through there again. I've been twice around Memorial weekend now and ran into just about all weather conditions at those times. I've been once the last week of July first week of August and had better weather. Went through once in September, and it was also fine during that particular time. Rode through last October and it was cold. I was just passing through on I70 and didn't do any stops at the high elevations.

I lived in NM for seven years and kept my bike and RV in Montrose for a year after that. I wouldn't spend the entire month of September in Colo, the first week is typically glorious but after that it gets real cold real fast, and it's off season anyway.

Basing out of northern New Mexico would be a consideration, easy enough to get to southern Colo and the weather should be much better through the end of the month. Plenty of awesome rides if you get driven south. High road to Taos. 96 through Abiquiu and Coyote, epic ride. Leaves will be changing and the peak will be marching south in Sept. If you can catch the aspens peaking above Santa Fe, it's stunning. Cool and not a cloud in the sky. Santa Fe is a great town -- it's up in the mountains at the bottom of the Sangre de Cristo range -- and the balloon festival will be going on in Albuquerque. Plenty to do.

That said, 3 weeks in Aug and one in Sept would be pretty optimal for colo

I wouldn't worry about traffic and tourists, although I've spent almost all of my colorado time in the southwest. Between Durango, Aspen and Alamosa the rides are awesome, the little towns are cool (Aspen is magic). I've never seen "traffic" per se. Traffic ranges from completely non-existent (gateway run) to mildly irritating (getting into Aspen). In some places you'll see more motorcycles than cars, by a good margin.
