Been using Booking.com for three to four years now. Has never left me without a place to stay.
Two years ago I used booking.com to locate a room in S.C.
I was a real dump and I only stayed because I was hot, tired, dry and was riding solo and was only staying one night.
If my wife had been with me we would not have stayed there, and I would not consider staying there again.
Is it just me or does anyone else have issues with the actual price of room being more than the advertised price on these booking sites?
Am I doing something wrong or what???
I have never seen that. But I have gotten to a few places and did not have a booking and the price they where asking at the counter was quite a bit higher than what Bookings was. They would not give me the Bookings price so I just booked it online and saved a bunch of bucks. ... then there was the time I got a $300 a night suite on the Oregon Coast for $40..... its a crap shoot, but one I am willing to take.
The problem with third-party apps/sites is that the hotels don't have to honor the price found in the apps/site. The hotels/motels list a limited number of rooms at the app price when those go..they are gone. The hotel/motel could list one or several each business makes up their own criteria. I have ceased using the apps while traveling for this reason. I use major chain apps such as Hilton, Quality, IHG, etc. Hilton rewards have paid off handsomely over time. My wife spent a week in Tucson helping our youngest get settled and stayed at the Embassy Suites there for a whopping $200 as we used points. My daughter and her husband use the IHG app exclusively as they travel internationally on a regular basis.
Longtime Booking.com user here, too. Great app and no doubt there are others. These 3rd party sites have become an important source of business for these motels according to a motel owner in Steamboat Springs I visited with one morning. Whatever one uses it’s always good to understand the cancellation policy for the listing since it may vary from one room to the next at the same facility.

You can still use the third party apps to find a good deal then phone the hotel for the booking. A lot of the times when this happens the 3rd party app is using the advertised deal price but the hotel/motel charges more after the fact. But if you call them directly you still get the deal.

Ive never encountered that using any app. If you make the reservation on the app, youve nailed the price. But if you go in without a reservation and then ask how come the walk in price is higher than on Booking or Expedia, that seems like something that cant really be answered.

My experience is similar, many times Ive used booking.com and arrived at hotel to be told it would have cheaper if Id called direct. So now I always call direct before booking online unless I get free cancellation. Sometimes talking to them garners perks....

I dont know.....seems like a lot of dicking around for maybe a couple bux. I dont like talking to people on the phone and would just rather set it up online and be done.
I am heading up to Lewiston tomorrow through Hells Canyon.... and I got a room for 42 bucks through Bookings, includes Breakfast... I will let you know if the place has a roof on it or not once I am in....
